SUBJECT:

Acceptance of Grant

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution accepting a grant from the Packard Foundation in the amount of $35,000 for Emergency Support Services.

Discussion

The Packard Foundation has generously offered the County of San Mateo a grant of $35,000, which would enable the County Office of Housing to provide additional funding for seven core agencies which are members of the Core Service Agency Network. These non-profit agencies have recently experienced an increased need for funding in light of the recent economic downturn.

The core agencies are the Coastside Opportunity Center in El Granada, the Daly City Community Services Center in Daly City, the Fair Oaks Community Center in Redwood City, the Family Support Center of the Mid-Peninsula in East Palo Alto, the North Peninsula Neighborhood Services Center in South San Francisco, the Pacifica Resource Center in Pacifica, and Samaritan House in San Mateo.

The core agencies in the Network provide an invaluable service by meeting the needs of the county's most vulnerable residents. They provide assistance in the forms of food, transportation, clothing, shelter, infant needs, housing and rental assistance, utility assistance, advocacy, translations, forms assistance landlord/tenant assistance and information/referral services to needy residents of the county.

The funds will be administered by the Office of Housing, through amendments signed by the County Manager or amendments to existing agreements. In order to ensure speedy disbursement of the funds, I recommend that the County Manager be authorized to sign agreements and amendments necessary to disburse the funds.

Fiscal Impact

The $35,000 grant consists entirely of private funding from the Packard Foundation, and would supplement the support that the county already provides to the seven core agencies.
