BOARD MEETING DATE:

January 29, 2002

TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Neil R. Cullen, Director of Public Works

SUBJECT:

Installation of Tree Guards on Middlefield Road - Middlefield Road Corridor Improvement Project

Recommendation

Authorize the Director of Public Works to purchase tree guards and to install them around the trees that were planted as part of the Middlefield Road Corridor Improvement Project (Project) from Fifth Avenue to the Atherton Town limits.

Previous Board Action

Authorized the Project which included the installation of street trees.

Key Facts

The North Fair Oaks Council (Council) has recommended the installation of tree guards to protect the recently installed street trees along Middlefield Road.

Discussion

The trees that were planted as part of the Project are threatened as some people prop items against the trees, motorists hit the trees with their cars, and some people have carved initials into the trunks of the trees. The Council has recommended that tree guards be installed to protect the trees while they are being established, and we concur with the Council's recommendations.

Fiscal Impact

The estimated cost to purchase and install 35 tree guards is $13,000. We are recommending that this work be financed by County Service Area 8 (CSA8) as CSA8 financed the installation of the street trees and other amenities in the Project area.

A copy of this staff report has been sent to the North Fair Oaks Council and we will report on any comments that we receive.

A form of resolution has been approved by County Counsel.
