BOARD MEETING DATE:

January 29, 2002

TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

John Maltbie, County Manager

SUBJECT:

Employee of the Month for January 2002

Recommendation
Honor Armando Landaverde as Employee of the Month for January 2002 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

Background
In September 1984, you approved a resolution establishing an Employee of the Month program and in December 1984, you honored the first San Mateo County Employee of the Month.

The Selection Committee has reviewed the nominations and recommends that Armando Landaverde, Community Services Officer in the Sheriff's Office be the January Employee of the Month.

Discussion
A County employee in the Sheriff's Office since May of 1994, Armando was hired as the first and only Community Service Officer.

Armando has defined the Community Service Officer position by writing parking tickets, towing cars and assisting with traffic problems. His efforts allow the Deputies work on other required duties. Due to his consistent assistance, two more Community Service Officer positions were created, thus freeing up more Deputies to assist the community.

Armando has been an example of what Community Policing is. He enjoys getting out in the community he serves and volunteering for projects. He has helped with most every community event in North Fair Oaks, often as the liaison from the Sheriff's Office. In addition to his required duties, he coaches a variety of sports with the SAL program, transports the children to the games, helps with community outreach events and assists in teaching DARE classes. Starting in January, Armando will be the Sheriff's Office coordinator for all events involving Special Olympics in the County. Armando never tires of helping when asked and especially enjoys helping whenever children are involved.

Armando constantly makes himself available to his coworkers as well as the community. He is the perfect representative of the Sheriff's Office by making everyone aware of the care and concern San Mateo County employees have for their community.

Our County is fortunate to have Armando Landaverde as one of its outstanding employees.
