Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Paul T. Scannell, Assistant County Manger

SUBJECT:

First Amendment To Residential Rental Agreement for Lease of the Sheriff's Commuter House at 731 Valota Road, Redwood City (Lease No. 1232)

Recommendation

Adopt a Resolution authorizing the President of the Board of Supervisors to execute a First Amendment To Residential Rental Agreement with Jerome W. and Karen Mertens for the Sheriff's Commuter House at 731 Valota Road, Redwood City.

Background

Since August of 2001 the Sheriff's Office has leased a house at 731 Valota Road in Redwood City as a Sheriff's Commuter House. In an effort to retain trained Deputies, the house provides temporary lodging for Deputies who must commute increasingly long distances to and from home and work.

Discussion

A First Amendment To Residential Lease Agreement has been negotiated to extend the term of the agreement through August 31, 2003 and provide three (3) one year options to renew the Rental Agreement under the same terms and conditions. The Assistant County Manager will be authorized to exercise the renewal options.

The Sheriff concurs with this recommendation. County Counsel has reviewed and approved the amendment as to form.

Vision Alignment

The First Amendment to Residential Lease Agreement keeps the commitment of responsive, effective and collaborative government and goal number 20: Government decisions are based on careful consideration of future impact, rather than temporary relief or gain.

The agreement contributes to this commitment and goal since it creates a solution to help retain trained Sheriff Deputies who must commute increasingly long distances to and from their homes and work.

Fiscal Impact

The rent for this facility is included in the Sheriff's approved fiscal budget.
