Resolution Authorizing the Narrowing of the Travel Lanes and Shoulders on the Crystal Springs Dam Bridge - Hillsborough/San Mateo Area [County Project No. R1103 - F-151(7D)]

____________________________________________________________________

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works has been working with the San Francisco Water Department to replace the Crystal Springs Dam Bridge (Bridge) for the past several years; and

WHEREAS, said work has been delayed due to the presence of endangered species which would have to be temporarily relocated in order to reconstruct the Bridge; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works had the Bridge re-evaluated due to the delay in moving forward with the reconstruction work; and

WHEREAS, said evaluation recommended that traffic loads be moved away from certain support girders due to the condition of the girders; and

WHEREAS, the Director of Public Works has determined that repair of the girders would require the same permits to relocate endangered species as required to reconstruct the Bridge, and therefore be subject to the same delays; and

WHEREAS, the Director of Public Works has recommended that the travel lanes and shoulders of the road on the Bridge be narrowed as appropriate in recognition of the existing condition of the girders and to continue to accommodate two-way traffic; and

WHEREAS, this Board has considered the recommendation of the Director of Public Works.

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Director of Public Works is hereby authorized to:

1.

reduce the travel lane and shoulder widths as appropriate to maintain two-way traffic on the Bridge; and

2.

take whatever action that may be necessary up to and including closing the Bridge if the bridge girders show additional signs of not being able to support the traffic loads on the Bridge.
