RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE COUNTY OF SAN MATEO TO JOIN THE CALIFORNIA SUDDEN OAK DEATH COASTAL COUNTIES COUNCIL IN SUPPORT OF FUNDING THE FIGHT AGAINST SUDDEN OAK DEATH

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, Sudden Oak Death is a virulent and adaptive disease decimating oak populations, infecting unrelated plant species and thriving in varied climates and environments;

 

WHEREAS, Sudden Oak Death has infected San Mateo and twelve other California counties-Alameda, Contra Costa, Humbolt, Marin, Mendocino, Monterey, Napa, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano and Sonoma;

 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is currently under a quarantine of oak and other plant products that can carry the Sudden Oak Death fungus;

 

WHEREAS, continuing federal and state funds are needed to combat Sudden Oak Death with continuing research, education, eradication and management;

 

WHEREAS, Marin County has called for the organization of the twelve counties affected with Sudden Oak Death through the creation of the California Sudden Oak Death Coastal Counties Council, charged with the responsibility of working with each county's respective legislative delegation;

 

WHEREAS, joining the California Sudden Oak Death Coastal Counties Council support the County's commitment to preserve our natural environment and sow the seeds of our future prosperity; and

 

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors by adoption of this resolution authorizing the County of San Mateo to join the California Sudden Oak Death Coastal Counties Council.
