TO:

FROM:

SUBJECT:

Employee of the Month for January 2003

Recommendation

Honor Selina Toy, Esther Lucas and Desi Tafoya as Employees of the Month for January 2003 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

Background

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employees of the Month for January 2003 are Selina Toy, Human Services Supervisor, Esther Lucas, Human Services Analyst II, and Desi Tafoya, Human Services Analyst II in the Human Services Agency.

Discussion

Both Esther and Desi have been County employees for over 10 years. Selina has worked for the County for 3 ½ years. All excel in their positions with the Alcohol and Drug Program.

Selina, Esther and Desi were nominated for their superior performance, most notably for their efforts in securing two prevention grants. When the State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs conducted a bid for Safe and Drug Free Schools funding for prevention activities, 56 counties applied. Only 33 awards were provided, with two grants awarded to San Mateo County. Selina, Esther and Desi coordinated the entire effort through numerous meetings, extensive writing, budget development, and collaboration with the lead educational agency and various community based organizations. Their commitment to prevention, kids, and youth is extraordinary. Their work on the grant application process is a manifestation of that commitment. As a result of their teamwork, the County received a $595,756 grant for the Coastside Youth Development Partnership project and $600,000 for the North County Youth Development Partnership project.

Our County is fortunate to have Selina Toy, Esther Lucas and Desi Tafoya as outstanding employees.
