RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF SENATE BILL 420 (VASCONCELLOS) REGARDING MEDICAL MARIJUANA

______________________________________________________________

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, existing state law, the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, prohibits physicians from being punished for recommending the use of marijuana for the treatment of patients with serious medical conditions and exempts such patients from prosecution for possession or cultivation of marijuana for medical purposes; and

WHEREAS, San Mateo County has worked with state and federal officials to research the use of medical marijuana for over 5 years ; and

WHEREAS, Senate Bill 420 (Vasconcellos) would create an identification card program for patients and primary caregivers and would provide an efficient and uniform system to distribute medical marijuana; and

WHEREAS, the information collected by the identification card program would benefit ongoing research about the need for medical marijuana for treatment of serious medical conditions that are not adequately alleviated through the use of conventional medications;

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors by the adoption of this resolution hereby supports Senate Bill 420 (Vasconcellos) establishing a statewide voluntary identification card system for the use of medical marijuana.
