BOARD MEETING DATE:

April 22, 2003

TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Neil R. Cullen, Director of Public Works

SUBJECT:

Installation of Stop Signs at the Adeline Drive/Los Robles Drive Intersection, and on Los Robles Drive at its Intersection with Hillside Drive - Burlingame Hills Area

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing the installation of stop signs on Adeline Drive, County Road No. 318, and on Los Robles Drive, County Road No. 333 at the "T" intersection of these two streets; and on Los Robles Drive, County Road No. 333 at its intersection with Hillside Drive.

Key Facts

Stop signs are warranted as there is limited sight distance for motorists approaching these intersections.

Discussion

Residents in the Burlingame Hills area, during the most recent discussions of speed control devices on Hillside Drive, asked that we evaluate the intersection of Adeline Drive and Los Robles Drive, and Los Robles Drive at Hillside Drive as they were concerned about their safety when traveling through these two intersections.

We conducted a study and determined that the stopping sight distance on all approaches to Adeline Drive/Los Robles Drive, and on Los Robles Drive at Hillside Dive is limited due to the adjacent steep terrain and vegetation. We concluded that the reduced sight distance warrants the installation of stop signs as recommended.

Vision Alignment

We believe our recommendation is consistent with your Board's Shared Vision Commitment to "ensure the basic health and safety for all" as stop signs will provide for the orderly flow of traffic through these intersections.

Fiscal Impact

Installing the stop signs is estimated to cost $800 and is proposed to be funded with Road Funds that have been appropriated this fiscal year to finance small road related improvements or traffic related installations.

There is no impact to the General Fund.

A form of resolution authorizing the installation of the stop signs has been approved by County Counsel.
