COMMENDING AND HONORING | ||||
THE ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN FRANCISCO | ||||
UPON THE OCCASION OF THEIR 150TH ANNIVERSARY | ||||

WHEREAS, it has come to the attention of the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California that the Archdiocese of San Francisco was founded on July 29, 1853; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in the first three decades of its history, the Archdiocese of San Francisco built up an extensive system of schools, orphanages, hospitals, and homes for the elderly and other institutions of charity; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the Archdiocese of San Francisco has served for 150 years as an anchor for numerous immigrant groups from Europe, Asia and the Philippines and Central and Latin America; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the Archdiocese of San Francisco continues to serve the people of San Mateo in parishes and institutions of enormous historical, cultural and social value to the County like St. Matthew's Parish (1863); Notre Dame College/University (1852 in San Jose, 1930 in Belmont); St. Patrick's Seminary (1898); Mercy High School Burlingame (1931); Serra High School (1944); Woodside Priory High School (1957); Seton Medical Center (1893 in San Francisco, Daly City 1964); Holy Cross Cemetery (mid 1887); and especially its 36 parishes and missions serving 205,991 Catholics (29% of San Mateo County's population); and | ||||
WHEREAS, the Archdiocese of San Francisco continues its mission of education in the County of San Mateo in its 23 Catholic elementary schools serving 7,440 students, its five Catholic high schools serving 2,852 students; and | ||||
WHEREAS, Catholics of the many parishes of the Archdiocese of San Francisco in the County of San Mateo make contributions to the economic, cultural and civic life of the County and thereby enhance the quality of life for all of its people. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, does hereby commend and honor the Archdiocese of San Francisco as they celebrate 150 outstanding years of service. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! | ||||
