Background

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for September 2003 is Marlin Brown, Group Supervisor III in the Probation Department.

Discussion

Marlin Brown has demonstrated a true love and commitment to his job. He greets each day at Hillcrest with excitement and enthusiasm. He is highly effective and well respected by the kids in custody as well as his peers. Marlin's passion for working with kids is evident through his day-to-day interaction with the kids on his housing unit; they genuinely love and respect him, because they know he has their best interest at heart. When it comes to Marlin Brown, the general tone throughout the Institution is one of high regard. From the kids that have known Marlin the three and a half years he has been at Hillcrest, to the kids he has only interacted with briefly, all share the same feelings. Routinely, parents of kids in our care comment about Mr. Brown being a positive male influence in their sons or daughters lives; he doesn't just talk the talk, he models the behavior on a daily basis.

Marlin is very supportive of his coworkers. He is one of the first to publicly acknowledge the positive contributions his coworkers have made to the overall Hillcrest program, and Marlin goes out of his way to ensure that they are recognized for their efforts. Marlin is very knowledgeable about the technical aspect of his job, and shares his knowledge willingly with less senior staff. He is very safety and security conscious and he never loses sight of our focus to provide the kids with a safe and humane environment.

He is a strong believer in our programs and backs up his beliefs with action. He always says that our programs give us the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of the kids who cross our path. He has implemented weekly essay writing programs, which gives the kids an opportunity to express themselves in writing. He has also implemented a strength and conditioning program, which teaches the kids proper strength training techniques. This program is not only educational, but therapeutic as well, and it allows the kids an opportunity to relieve stress and tension, with a positive outcome. Lastly, Marlin is the chairman of the highly successful Annual Summer Olympics event. The weeklong event consists of over 25 educational and physical competitions, and every kid in the facility is encouraged to participate.

It is evident through his actions that Marlin loves his job and feels that working with kids at Hillcrest is one of the most important and fulfilling things a person can do. He is a very positive role model for the youth in our Hall; he is bright, articulate, very positive, extremely caring, and combines discipline with an environment that builds assets, self esteem, self-respect and respect for others. He is a superb mentoring role model for any youth at Juvenile Hall.

Our County is fortunate to have Marlin Brown as one of its outstanding employees.
