TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Chris Flatmoe - CIO/Director Information Services

SUBJECT:

Execution to extend an Agreement with Baxter Healthcare, Inc.

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution extending the Agreement term with Baxter Healthcare, Inc. for software support from December 31, 2003 to December 31, 2004.

Background

On July 13, 1999, the Board of Supervisors approved an agreement with Autros Hospital Systems Inc. to provide pharmacy software for the San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC). In early 2000, the Autros system was implemented for inpatient pharmacy. Since the 2000 implementation, Baxter Healthcare, Inc. has acquired Autros Hospital Systems, Inc. Baxter Healthcare, Inc. supplies application support and programming services for the Pharmacy system to SMMC.

Discussion

Extension of the Baxter Healthcare contract term from December 31,2003 to December 31, 2004 will provide SMMC with continued 24/7 software support. This agreement provides support for the pharmacy department staff as well as Information Services Department (ISD) analysts and technical staff. Baxter Healthcare will continue to work with the SMMC to provide product upgrades, which will keep the pharmacy at the most current, supported version of pharmacy software. In addition to ensuring product support, software version compliance enables the SMMC to move forward with additional/new software modules. There are also applications, Out Patient Pharmacy and Nursing Point of Care, which are funded in the original contract and have not yet been implemented by the Medical Center. Implementation timelines are currently under review.

Vision Alignment

This contract extension with Baxter Healthcare keeps the commitment to providing all San Mateo County residents with healthcare, specifically visioning goal number 2: All residents have access to health care and preventive care.

Fiscal Impact

This Amendment solely extends the Agreement term through December 31, 2004. There are sufficient funds in the Agreement's original amount of $550,000 to cover the Agreement term.
