FROM:

John Maltbie, County Manager

SUBJECT:

Employee of the Month for January 2004

Recommendation

Honor Rita Cortes as Employee of the Month for January 2004 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

Background

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for January 2004 is Rita Cortes, Child Support Supervisor, in the Department of Child Support Services.

Discussion

A County employee since June 1996, Rita has been promoted over the years from a Child Support Officer I, II, III and then to Supervisor in 2001. In 2003, Rita was selected to spearhead the development of procedures and training for the department's conversion from the CHASER automated system to the CASES child support system. Rita's expertise as child support specialist and as an excellent trainer made her the perfect choice for this special assignment.

During the planning, development and implementation of this major conversion, Rita was calm, directed and thorough. She assessed day-to-day business processes, made recommendations for the redesign of business practices, wrote procedures, kept all units informed of the project's progress and trained all staff on the new procedures.

Throughout her work on this project, Rita maintained her sense of humor and positive attitude. Managers, supervisors and employees alike commend Rita for her leadership and superior work on the many facets of the conversion. Her diligence, expertise and professionalism, were invaluable contributions to this project. All employees in the Child Support Division wholeheartedly endorse Rita's nomination and selection.

Our County is fortunate to have Rita Cortes as one of its outstanding employees.
