SUBJECT:

Employee of the Month for May 2004

Recommendation

Honor Joseph Sheridan as Employee of the Month for May 2004 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

Background

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for May 2004 is Joseph Sheridan, in the Sheriff's Office.

Discussion

A County employee since August 1999, Joe is the School Resource Officer assigned to the seven schools in the Cabrillo and La Honda/Pescadero Districts. Deputy Sheridan is a tremendous resource to all of the schools in the districts. He teaches DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) and GREAT (Gang Resistance Education and Training). He began the first student run School Safety Patrol at Hatch School in Half Moon Bay. This program was developed to ease the commutes to and from school after the Cabrillo District found it necessary to eliminate school buses from the district in answer to budgetary concerns. The remaining elementary schools in the district are following suit in order to create a safe way to school for all of their students.

Joe is very involved in his position. He is a resource to both the school staff and the parents of students. He works very hard to help both parties, putting in hours of his own time to help everyone.

Joe is also an Advisor to the Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Explorer Post. Once again he gives his time to youth from around the County in assisting them in learning life skills that will certainly help them with their future. This position also takes Joe's time during evenings and weekends. Joe has chaperoned the Explorer Post on several out of State conferences on his own time and expense to ensure the young people involved receive a broad perspective of the world around them and to give them the life experiences they may not otherwise live.

Joe sits on the Board of Directors for the Coastside Children's Program. This program runs the after school day care centers located at all of the elementary schools in Cabrillo and the elementary school in La Honda. Joe helps supervise the activities at the Sheriff's Activity League (SAL) located at Half Moon Bay High School. Joe is always welcomed by the 70 high school students enrolled in this successful after school program.

Besides all the above, Joe also does normal Deputy work whenever the office is short staffed or there is a need for an extra person. He is the first to volunteer to help his fellow workers, residents and supervisors. Joe is an exceptional employee and sets a standard far above most employees.

Our County is fortunate to have Joseph Sheridan as one of its outstanding employees.
