TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

John Maltbie, County Manager

SUBJECT:

Employee of the Month for July, 2004

Recommendation
Honor Nancy Bennett as Employee of the Month for July 2004 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

Background
In September 1984, you approved a resolution establishing an Employee of the Month program and in December 1984, you honored the first San Mateo County Employee of the Month.

The Selection Committee has reviewed the nominations and recommends that Nancy Bennett, a Charge Nurse in the Correctional Health Division of the Health Services Agency, be the July, 2004 Employee of the Month.

Discussion
A County employee for nearly nine years, Nancy began her career as a Staff Nurse and was promoted to Charge Nurse in 2001.

Nancy was nominated by Sergeant Gil Rodriquez of the Maguire Correctional Facility for her “calm in the face of adversity, knowledge in time of question, and support and understanding in time of trouble or doubt.” Further, Sergeant Rodriguez commends Nancy as a consummate professional, a thoughtful and tireless worker, and a valued employee.

With only a brief period of training, Nancy learned a very complex set of clinical skills and protocols, and she has provided a consistently high level of competent and professional services. She has had the opportunity to work with a wide range of impaired individuals including acute and chronic medical disorders, severely mentally ill, chronically chemically dependent, developmentally disabled and multiple co-occurring disorders. She responds to all of these individuals with respect, compassion and professionalism. Her high level of competence and interpersonal skills led to her promotion to the Charge Nurse position. She has continued to maintain the highest standards of care while supervising others as a Charge Nurse. She also has maintained excellent collaborative relationships with members of the medical, mental health, chemical dependency, and security teams.

Ms. Bennett has been efficient, organized, reliable, highly productive and very professional in her work. She is energetic and maintains a very positive attitude. As a result of her consistently enthusiastic approach and highly competent clinical services, she has developed excellent working relationships with all staff. Her humor and optimistic attitude are appreciated by her staff, her patients, their families, and her superiors.

Our County is fortunate to have Nancy Bennett as one of its outstanding employees.
