SUBJECT:
Amendment to the Agreement with Gambro Healthcare Renal Care, Inc., a Nevada Corporation
Recommendation
Adopt a resolution authorizing the President of the Board to execute an Amendment to the Agreement with Gambro Healthcare Renal Care, Inc., a Nevada Corporation, to institute a fee for an aborted hemodialysis procedure.
Background
San Mateo County is responsible for providing medical care to its medically indigent adult (MIA) population. This care includes acute inpatient dialysis treatment at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC). Because of necessary equipment and specialized staffing, it is more economical to contract out for this service. After a Request for Proposal process in May 2003, Gambro was selected as the vendor of choice for the provision of acute inpatient dialysis treatment.
Discussion
At Gambro’s request, SMMC is instituting a fee for an aborted procedure. This means that a Gambro staff member comes and sets up the equipment for a procedure and then (usually due to clinical circumstances) the physician decides not to dialysis the patient. The payment of $200 will cover the fees of the contractor providing staff and equipment for this period. This past year, San Mateo Medical Center has had three instances of an aborted procedure.

Vision Alignment
This agreement keeps the commitment to Ensure Basic Health and Safety for All and goal number 5: Provide residents access to healthcare and preventive care. The Agreement contributes to this commitment and goal by providing renal care services to county patients.
Fiscal Impact
The term of the agreement remains the same, July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2005, and the maximum amount of $400,000 remains the same.
