Recommendation

Honor Marie Jane Madayag-Santos Employee of the Month for February, 2004 and authorize the President of the Board to sign the commendation.

Background

In September 1984, you approved a resolution establishing an Employee of the Month program and in December 1984, you honored the first San Mateo County Employee of the Month.

The Selection Committee has reviewed the nominations and recommends that Marie Jane Santos, Charge Nurse in the AIDS Program of the Health Services Agency be the February Employee of the Month.

Discussion
Jane has worked as a nurse for San Mateo County for the past seventeen years since receiving her bachelor's degree in nursing. She has worked as a nurse in Public Health for the last eight years. She was promoted to Charge Nurse of the Health Services AIDS Program Edison Clinic just last year after serving in an Acting Charge Nurse capacity for two years.

Jane is a tireless worker. With only the assistance of one Medical Services Assistant and occasional per diem nursing support, Jane has provided nursing coverage for over 400 clients and eight medical providers. Jane has been unflappable, gracefully transitioning from triage to nursing intake to administrative support responsibilities. She has maintained her poise and focus despite being pulled in many directions.

Jane is always professional in her interactions. She is well liked by her fellow colleagues. She is a consistently hard worker. She is very supportive of medical staff and has been instrumental in supporting both new post-doctoral fellows as well as veteran hospital and clinic staff. Jane has good administrative skills. She always follows through on her responsibilities. She has an excellent memory for detail and always makes sure that she completes her assignments. She takes an active role in programmatic activities and decisions. She is a trooper when dealing with the extensive tracking, noting and paperwork functions. She is a caring team member and a strong advocate for her staff.

Jane has an engaging sense of humor and is as quick to dispense a smile as she is an injection. She is able to see the lighter side in difficult situations. She is well liked and respected by her co-workers.

Jane is very much appreciated by our client population. She is an exemplary caring professional, patient and compassionate. She is able to deftly balance client advocacy within the context of her responsibilities as a representative of a health care system. She has a gentle way of calming patients and also setting limits when necessary. Her length of service in the clinic has been an integral part of the successful health outcomes that many of our patients enjoy. She is very accepting and nonjudgmental and able to see the humanity in even the most challenging of our patients. She has found the balance of always maintaining professional boundaries and yet has managed to remain engaged with our patients even though she has seen many succumb to AIDS.

Jane is a team player. She is quiet and hard worker who is happy to let others enjoy the limelight. She works tirelessly to make sure that the clients in the Edison Clinic always receive excellent and consistent medical care. She is the kind of employee who makes San Mateo County's services shine.

Our County is fortunate to have Jane as one of its outstanding employees.
