TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Neil R. Cullen, Director of Public Works

SUBJECT:

Installation of Stop Signs on Nimitz Avenue at Osborn Avenue - Sequoia Tract - Redwood City Area

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing the installation of stop signs on Nimitz Avenue, County Road No.518, and its intersection with Osborn Avenue, County Road No 507.

Key Facts

Stop signs are warranted on Nimitz Avenue at the intersection with Osborn Avenue as there is limited sight distance for motorists approaching the intersection.

Discussion

Residents in the area requested that we evaluate the above referenced intersection as they are concerned with the speed of traffic on Nimitz Avenue. Stop signs are not an appropriate method to control the speed of traffic on a street. However, our subsequent analysis confirmed that stop signs are warranted as the sight distance for motorists on Nimitz and Osborn Avenues is limited by landscape vegetation. The sight distance could be improved and the need for stop signs eliminated by removing several trees and shrubs. However, we believe that installing stop signs without disturbing the landscaping will improve traffic safety while preserving the character of the neighborhood.

Vision Alignment

We believe our recommendation is consistent with Goal number 7, "maintain and enhance the public safety of all residents and visitors" of your Board's Shared Vision Commitment to "ensure the basic health and safety for all" as stop signs will provide for the orderly flow of traffic through this intersection.

Fiscal Impact:

Installing the stop signs is estimated to cost $800 and is proposed to be funded with Road Funds that have been appropriated this fiscal year to finance small road related improvements or traffic related installations.

There is no impact to the General Fund.

A form of resolution authorizing the installation of the stop signs has been approved by County Counsel.
