SUBJECT:

Amendment to agreement with California Emergency Physicians

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing an amendment to the agreement with California Emergency Physicians for the provision of Medical Director services for the Keller Center for Family Violence Intervention and extended hours of physician services in the Emergency Department.

Background

California Emergency Physicians (CEP) provides the physician and physician assistant staff for the Emergency Department at the San Mateo Medical Center and medical direction and on-call and relief physician services for the Maguire Facility.

Discussion

This amendment incorporates administrative and clinical activities for the Keller Center for Family Violence Intervention as well as extended physician hours within the Emergency Department.

CEP agrees to provide a Board Certified onsite Medical Director for the Keller Center for Family Violence Intervention, whose duties may include nursing consultation, forensic photo review, community education, and court appearances as needed. CEP will also provide additional weekly hours of Emergency Room coverage to the extent necessary, but not to exceed fourteen (14) hours per week, to address the increased patient volume and overall workload of the Emergency Department Physicians.

Vision Alignment

This agreement keeps the commitment to Ensure Basic Health and Safety for All and goal number 5: Provide residents access to healthcare and preventive care. The Agreement contributes to this commitment and goal by continuing to provide medical services coverage to the Keller Center for Domestic Family Violence and the Emergency Department.

Fiscal Impact

The term of this amendment is January 23, 2004 to December 31, 2004. California Emergency Physicians shall be paid a maximum of $15,876 for the Medical Director activities with the Keller Center, and an amount not to exceed $111,132 for additional weekly coverage of Emergency Services at SMMC. The increase for FY2003-04 is $63,504 and will be the same for FY 2004-05. The maximum amount of the amendment is $127,008, for a total maximum amount of the agreement of $4,532,520. Funds are included in the Approved Budgets for the Department of Hospital and Clinics for FY2003-04 and will be requested in FY2004-05.
