Adopt a resolution authorizing the President of the Board to execute an agreement with Duc Marcel Nguyen, M.D. |

Background |
San Mateo County is responsible for providing necessary medical care to its medically indigent population. This care includes professional orthopedic services. Duc Marcel Nguyen, M.D., provides professional orthopedic services including the management and supervision of those services. |

Discussion |
Dr. Nguyen has provided orthopedic services at the San Mateo Medical Center for the past two years and will continue to provide the same level of services as in the previous agreement. Orthopedic services are provided under the general direction of the Chief Executive Officer of San Mateo Medical Center. Monitoring and evaluation of the quality of his services will continue to be accomplished through peer review by the Quality Assurance Committee and the Executive Committee of the medical staff. |

This agreement keeps the commitment to Ensure Basic Health and Safety for All and goal number 5: Provide residents access to healthcare and preventive care.
The agreement contributes to this commitment and goal by continuing to provide orthopedic services to county patients. |

Fiscal Impact |
The term of the agreement is for three years from April 1, 2004 through March 31, 2007. This agreement pays Dr. Nguyen up to a maximum amount of $810,937.34 over the term of the agreement. Funding for 2003-04 is included in the approved budget for the medical center and will be included in the 2004-05 projected budget request. |
