BOARD MEETING DATE:

TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Sheriff Don Horsley

SUBJECT:

Acceptance of a Donation of a Rescue Boat

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing the President of the Board to accept a donation from Mr. David M. Crisp of Azle, Texas, of a 27 foot rescue boat valued at approximately $7,000 to $10,000. The vessel is currently berthed at Coyote Point Harbor.

Background and Discussion

The Sheriff’s Office currently operates three boats that are utilized to perform water rescues and in support of the Sheriff’s Marine, volunteer Diver/Rescue program. One is a 32 foot Farallon which is routinely being used for the additional duty of security in the waters on both sides of the County. The two additional boats are an 18 foot a Zodiac Rigid Hull inflatable and a 14 foot inflatable.

The donor has contacted the Sheriff's Office and indicated that he would like to donate a 1970 Owens 27 foot, twin gasoline engine, fiberglass powerboat. The boat will be able to perform duties along the coastline and bayside of San Mateo County. He would like to donate this boat to the County for use in the Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit.

This boat would greatly enhance the capability of the Sheriff’s Marine Unit by providing an additional vessel that can be used for search and rescue and security needs. This vessel would also enable our Sheriff’s Marine Unit to have a standby boat in the event that our main craft is either not available due to scheduled maintenance or unavailable due to other circumstances.

Vision Alignment

Accepting this donation of a rescue boat aligns with Goals No. 2 and 7 by encouraging civic engagement and volunteerism, as well as maintaining and enhancing public safety of all residents and visitors.

Fiscal Impact

The only cost would be the annual maintenance and fuel costs that would be covered under the current Sheriff’s Office budget. Therefore, there is no effect on the net county cost.
