RESOLUTION ACCEPTING A GRANT FROM VALEANT PHARMACEUTICAL INTERNATIONAL ADMINISTERED THROUGH PHAMANET, LLC AND EXECUTING AN AGREEMENT WITH PHAMANET, LLC TO CONDUCT A RESEARCH STUDY FOR PERSONS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS C

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, the Clinical Trials and Research Unit of the San Mateo Medical Center was established by the Health Services Agency in 2000 in order to provide a mechanism and infrastructure for the conduct of clinical treatment trials and medical or psychosocial research projects for the benefit of the residents of San Mateo County; and

WHEREAS, a preliminary assessment by the Unit staff identified Hepatitis C as a problem affecting many of the County’s patients with HIV and the Unit discovered that patients are not responding to the current drug treatments; and

WHEREAS, on April 22, 2004, PharmaNet, LLC, notified the San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC) that SMMC was selected to receive an award of $92,800 to participate in a Randomized, Double-Blinded Multi-Centered Study to compare the safety and efficacy of Viraminde to Ribavirin in Treatment-Naïve Patients with Chronic Hepatitis C; and

WHEREAS, the term of the agreement is upon execution by both parties and until the objectives of the Study are accomplished; and

WHEREAS, this Board has been presented with a form of the grant award and the Agreement and has examined and approved it as to both form and content and desires to accept the grant and enter into the Agreement.

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the President of this Board of Supervisors be, and is hereby authorized and directed to accept the award in the amount of $92,800 and to execute an Agreement for and on behalf of the County of San Mateo, and the Clerk of this Board shall attest the President's signatures thereto.
