RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 67 REGARDING EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES FUNDING AND TELEPHONE SURCHARGES

______________________________________________________________

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, emergency room closures throughout California and in San Mateo County provide evidence of the growing problem of funding uninsured emergency room care; and

WHEREAS, Proposition 67, which will appear before voters during the November 2004 general election, would impose a 3% increase to certain telephone use surcharge rates to fund, among other things, hospitals for emergency services, community clinics for uncompensated care, emergency personnel training/equipment, and emergency telephone system improvements; and

WHEREAS, under Proposition 67, a majority of resources (60%) would go to reimburse hospitals for the cost of uncompensated emergency and trauma care; and

WHEREAS, support of Proposition 67 furthers the County’s Visioning 2010 commitment to ensure basic health and safety for all and supports its goal that residents have access to healthcare and preventative care;

NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors by the adoption of this resolution hereby supports Proposition 67.
