THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING MAY 30 TO JUNE 4 AS

SAN MATEO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS’ VOTER REGISTRATION WEEK

WHEREAS, it is with great honor and pride that the San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum, the San Mateo County League of Women Voters and the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors proclaim the week of May 30 – June 4, 2005, “San Mateo County High School Students’ Voter Registration Week”; and

   

WHEREAS, the future of our democracy and all that we hold dear rests in our ability to instill the traditions of voter participation and civic engagement in each and every generation in America. San Mateo County Chief Elections Officer Warren Slocum is committed to encouraging the active participation of all voters and especially younger voters who are typically under-represented in our democracy; and

   

WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters has a proud history, founded on the principle of engaging women in the process of voting and cultivating an informed electorate, who by their very participation, strengthen the fabric of our community; and

   

WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors brings the issues of foremost importance before the community in open forums to help reach decisions that best serve all the people of this County; and

 

WHEREAS, our schools in their daily endeavors, prepare students to be good citizens, thoughtful leaders for coming generations and responsible members and guardians of this democracy; and

   

WHEREAS, together, we invite all San Mateo County High School Students who are coming of the legal voting age of 18 by June 2006 to register to vote, to learn about the voting process, to become educated on the issues before them and to join in the adult practice of community decision-making that takes place when citizens cast their ballots on election day, this year and every year thereafter; and

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates May 30th to June 4th as San Mateo County High School Students’ Voter Registration Week and further, encourages all students to register to vote and to exercise this precious right guaranteed by the Constitution of this United States of America.
