SUBJECT:

Status Report from the Youth Commission on Needs Assessment Project

VISION ALIGNMENT:

Goal(s):

    1. Our diverse population works well together to build strong communities, effective government, and a prosperous economy.

    2. Civic engagement – including voting, public service, charitable giving volunteerism and participation in public discussions of important issues – is uniformly high among the diverse population.

BACKGROUND:

On January 12th, 2005, the Youth Commission presented to the Board their plans to conduct a needs assessment on the various programs available to youth in San Mateo County. This needs assessment was to assess youth attitudes, behaviours and needs around issues that affect their day-to-day lives, including violence, alcohol, tobacco and drug use, sexual health, discrimination, and mental health. After this analysis, the Youth Commissioners would examine those programs in place, determine their success, and propose potential changes to existing programs and/or suggest new programs.

The Youth Commission would like to present to the Board a status report on their work, as well as receive feedback from the Board on the tool they plan on using in the fall to gather data for the needs assessment. The Youth Commission would also like to give a general update on their other activities.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None.
