THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

DESIGNATES AUGUST 16, 2005 AS

 

LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN DAY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN has served the people of San Mateo County exceedingly well as a member of the San Mateo Police Department for 21 years, championing the rights and protection of the vulnerable in our society; and

 

WHEREAS, while serving with the San Mateo Police Department, LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN set many “firsts” as she was the first openly gay officer, the first female police sergeant and the first female police lieutenant in the Department; and

 

WHEREAS, LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN has made the fight against domestic violence and equality for women her life’s work as evidenced by her active role on the San Mateo County Commission on the Status of Women, the Board of Directors of Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse (CORA) and the State Attorney General’s Commission on Domestic Violence; and

 

WHEREAS, the Emergency Response Program, a collaboration of CORA and law enforcement agencies in the County, was not only LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN’S idea, but she and a colleague wrote the proposal that successfully funded the program; and

 

WHEREAS, LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN put together the first known drug conspiracy case in California, was credited for seizing the single largest piece of rock cocaine in San Mateo County, dubbed the “Hope Diamond” by narcotics experts, and was the only narcotics detective in the City of San Mateo’s history to receive the prestigious Narcotics Officer of the Year Award; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the County of San Mateo Board of Supervisors that August 16, 2005, is hereby designated LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN DAY, and here and after the Board of Supervisors and the Domestic Violence Council, in the spirit of LIEUTENANT BARBARA HAMMERMAN‘S legacy of exemplary service and dedication, will annually recognize a law enforcement officer in San Mateo County who has demonstrated service beyond the call of duty to the survivors of domestic violence.
