RESOLUTION 1)ACCEPTING A GRANT FROM IDENIX PHARMACEUTICALS, INC. IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $94,560 TO CONDUCT A CLINICAL TRIAL EVALUATING THE COMBINATION OF PEGYLATED INTERFERON ALFA PLUS VALOPICITABINE (NM283) IN TREATMENT-NAïVE PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS C; AND 2) AUTHORIZING THE EXECUTION OF AN AGREEMENT WITH IDENIX PHARMACEUTICALS, INC. TO CONDUCT THE CLINICAL TRIAL FOR THE TERM JULY 20, 2005 UNTIL THE TRIAL IS COMPLETED,

IN AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $94,560

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, the Clinical Trials and Research Unit of the San Mateo County Health Center was established by the Health Services Agency in 2000 in order to provide a mechanism and infrastructure for the conduct of clinical treatment trials and medical or psychosocial research projects for the benefit of the residents of San Mateo County; and

WHEREAS, a preliminary assessment by the Unit staff identified HIV/AIDS as a problem affecting many of the County’s patients. The Clinical Trials and Research Unit discovered that patients are not responding to the current drug treatments. This trial will evaluate patient’s response to this new drug treatment; and

WHEREAS, there has been presented to this Board of Supervisors for its consideration and acceptance an Award, reference to which is hereby made for further particulars, whereby Idenix Pharmaceuticals will allocate funds in an amount not to exceed $94,560 for the provision of a research study to evaluate the combination of Pegylated Interferon Alfa plus Valopicitabine (NM283) in Treatment-Naïve patients with Chronic Hepatitis C; and

WHEREAS, there has been presented to this Board of Supervisors for its consideration and acceptance a Agreement with Idenix Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to conduct said clinical trial for the term July 20, 2005 until the trial is completed, in an amount not to exceed $94,560; and

WHEREAS, this Board has been presented with the Award and the Agreement and desires to accept the award and enter into the Agreement.

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors be, and is hereby authorized and directed to accept said Award and execute said Agreement for and on behalf of the County of San Mateo, and the Clerk of this Board shall attest the President's signatures thereto.
