BACKGROUND

The Employee of the Month program was established in December 1984 to recognize and honor County employees who consistently demonstrate an outstanding level of performance.

Our Employee of the Month for October 2005 is Deborah Sousa, a Staff Nurse in the San Mateo Medical Center.

DISCUSSION

First hired as Relief Nurse in November 1994, Deborah was hired in a full time regular position in 1997. In 1999, Deborah transferred from the Medical Center to the Willow Clinic.

Dr. Sang-ick Chang, Vice-President and Medical Director of Ambulatory Services nominated Deborah. Deborah Sousa, in response to the San Mateo Medical Center’s campaign to improve medication safety and reduce errors, brought to attention the fact that a recent manufacturer’s packaging change caused two drugs, both used in the treatment of respiratory emergencies, to look identical to each other. Because they would normally be stored next to each other, and be used in similar circumstances, there was a danger of someone grabbing the wrong drug in an urgent clinical situation. It was noted in the Medication Safety Bulletin issued by the Pharmacy Department released in response to Deborah’s observation, that accidental use of the wrong “look-alike” drug could have had serious medical consequences.

We applaud and employee such as Deborah who takes personal responsibility for the safety and well being of not only our patients, but our entire organization as well.

Deborah is meticulous and very responsible in her management of the medications at Willow Clinic. In her roles as triage nurse and case manager she is dedicated, patient-focused and a wonderful teacher.

Our County is fortunate to have Deborah Sousa as one of its outstanding employees.
