THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING OCTOBER 2005 AS

MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS MONTH 2005

WHEREAS the National Alliance on Mental Illness of San Mateo County (NAMI-SMC) is a non-profit, volunteer, grass-roots organization of families, individuals, and professionals dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with serious mental illness; and

   

WHEREAS 2005 marks 31 years since the founding of the charter affiliate of NAMI in San Mateo County and today it has over 1,200 affiliates and 250,000 members throughout the United States and beyond; and

   

WHEREAS the NAMI mission is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with mental illness and their families through support, education and advocacy; and

   

WHEREAS NAMI is committed to advocacy on mental health policy issues regarding access to quality treatment and services, housing, education, employment and medical research, while providing a network of support groups and educational services to assist families of the mentally ill and people with mental illness at the local level; and

 

WHEREAS this month will heighten the public’s awareness of mental illness and the tremendous effort taking place through the voter approved Mental Health Services Act to provide mental health services to underserved and hard to reach populations; and

 

WHEREAS NAMI, community leaders, nonprofit mental health service providers and the San Mateo County Department of Mental Health deserve recognition for their efforts to involve families of people living with mental illness in planning for better treatment and services for an illness that has historically been misunderstood;

   

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, designates October 2005 as MENTAL ILLNESS AWARENESS MONTH 2005, and hereby urges all citizens of our county to support effective, compassionate care for people with mental illness.
