For the past six years, Lydia Guzman has headed up the California Nutrition Network (CNN) Program for the San Mateo County Health Department. CNN is a statewide program providing nutrition education for targeted low-income families and technical assistance in nutrition to professional care providers. The goals of San Mateo County CNN include increasing nutrition knowledge, promoting physical activity and reducing risk of chronic disease in low-income populations through various presentations and activities.
Lydia has worked tirelessly in coming up with innovative ways to get the nutrition message out to our county residents. She developed “Veggie Fairs” for elementary and after school programs to introduce children to fruits and vegetables, “Teen Health Spas” for teens to learn about good nutrition while improving self-esteem, nutrition newsletters for teens and adults, education for preschool parents on healthy meals and snacks for children and participation in cultural fairs in low-income areas to name just a few. All the programs she has developed are bi-lingual since most of our low-income residents are Hispanic.
With a staff of two, herself and one assistant, Lydia’s programs have reached an average of 50,000 residents all over the County! Lydia does this with a commitment and dedication second to none. She believes wholeheartedly in her programs and loves the people that she serves.
In past State review, Lydia has consistently received high marks for her innovative program, effective curriculums and excellent client participation rates. State reviewers stated this year that San Mateo County CNN was considered the “Gold Standard” among county programs. This is due to Lydia’s leadership and her understanding of the needs of our County residents.
Our County is fortunate to have Lydia Guzman as one of its outstanding employees.
