RESOLUTION
   

THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA

RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING

 

STERLING SPEIRN

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, STERLING SPEIRN has provided innovative leadership as President of the Peninsula Community Foundation for 15 years; and

   

WHEREAS, STERLING SPEIRN led the Peninsula Community Foundation as it grew from $4 million to $611 million in total assets, and launched the Center for Venture Philanthropy, co-founded the Peninsula Partnership for Children, Youth and Families; and

   

WHEREAS, in both 2003 and 2004, STERLING SPEIRN was named one of the most influential nonprofit leaders in the United States by the Nonprofit Times; and

   

WHEREAS, STERLING SPEIRN is former chairman of the statewide League of California Community Foundations, serves on the Board of Advisors of Pacific Community Ventures and the Global Philanthropy Forum, and is on the Board of Directors of the Northern California Grantmakers; and

   

WHEREAS, STERLING SPEIRN was a steadfast champion and cheerleader for many critical efforts including Raising a Reader, Kindergarten Readiness, and Civic Engagement which improved the quality of life in San Mateo County; and

 

WHEREAS, STERLING SPEIRN brought an unprecedented enthusiasm and commitment to collaboration with local government the hallmark of which was his efforts to co-found the Peninsula Partnership for Children, Youth and Families; and

   

WHEREAS, STERLING SPEIRN will be returning to his home state of Michigan in 2006 to become the new President and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation in Battle Creek; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County expresses congratulations and sincere gratitude to STERLING SPEIRN for his outstanding contribution to the field of philanthropy and the Peninsula community and hereby wishes him continued success in the next phase of his career.
