RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN SAN MATEO MEDICAL CENTER, STANFORD UNIVERSITY, AND SAN FRANCISCO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH TO CONDUCT A COLLABORATIVE
HIV/AIDS RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that
|
|
WHEREAS, in November 2004, the Universitywide AIDS Research Partnership (UARP) Program, affiliated with the University of California, issued a Request for Applications (RFA) to fund Collaborative HIV/AIDS Research Partnerships targeted at underrepresented populations with HIV for up to $4.8 million over four years; and
|
|
WHEREAS, the San Mateo Clinical Trials and Research Unit (CTRU) currently coordinates a portfolio of over 30 HIV/AIDS clinical trials and research studies funded by the County, National Institutes for Health, drug industry and State including peer-reviewed studies sponsored by UARP; and
|
|
WHEREAS, the UARP Collaborative HIV/AIDS Research Partnership requires that the application be jointly submitted by an academic institution and a local community-based agency or health jurisdiction such as the CTRU; and
|
|
WHEREAS, the CTRU is currently collaborating with the Stanford University School of Medicines AIDS Research Group on 13 separate HIV/AIDS studies and
|
|
WHEREAS, the City/County of San Francisco Department of Public Health’s STD Program has expressed interest in submitting a joint proposal with the CTRU and Stanford AIDS Research Group; and
|
|
WHEREAS, a research theme that would “apply innovative technologies to public health interventions for surveillance, prevention and care aimed at underrepresented populations (African-Americans, Latinos and women) in San Mateo County and the City/County of San Francisco” has been defined and developed; and
|
|
WHEREAS, community-based research to prevent the continued spread of HIV/AIDS has been a long-standing Board priority through support for the Clinical Trials and Research Unit; and
|
|
WHEREAS, this Board has been presented with a form of the application to the grant and has examined and approved it as to both form and content and desires to support the grant:
|
|
NOW THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors supports the application being submitted by the Clinical Trials and Research Unit in partnership with the Stanford AIDS Research Group and the City/County of San Francisco Department of Public Health STD Services to become a designated California Collaborative HIV/AIDS Research Center through UARP.
