The new position and differential change will assist the departments in meeting their individual performance expectations by assuring that they have staff with the skills necessary to perform the work. The conversion of the unclassified positions implements the will of the voters as reflected in their passage of Measure D. | |||
Background | |||
Each year following budget deliberations your Board adopts the annual salary ordinance. The ordinance enacts the decisions made during budget hearings concerning the number of positions in the County service. Throughout the year, because of changes in the operating needs of departments, salary ordinance amendments are recommended that make changes to department staffing configurations. | |||
Discussion | |||
The salary ordinance changes herein represent: • adding one new position, • changing one existing differential, and • converting five unclassified positions to classified status as required by Measure D. These actions were approved for study by the County Manager's Office and the amendment has been reviewed by the County Counsel’s Office. The specific actions are discussed in detail below. | |||

This is the addition of one new position of Deputy District Attorney. The position is being added to assist in handling increased workload in the office as referrals and filings have increased approximately twenty-three percent in the last two years. This action represents a monthly salary and benefits cost of $15,586 based on filling the position at the top step of the range. The action increases the total number of authorized positions by one. | ||

This increase is consistent with the increase given to the represented law enforcement personnel and is necessary to maintain the salary differential between the classifications.
