Background

As we are all so sadly aware, on the afternoon of Sunday, January 30, 2005, well-known San Mateo County photojournalist and good friend to all of us, Susan Caldwell, died in a tragic automobile accident. As a single mom to 14-year-old Nina Garrison, who also died in the accident, Susan worked diligently for the past 16 years as a staff photographer for the Independent and Examiner newspapers. With great skill and professionalism, Susan covered the county recording the life and times of the Peninsula from day-to-day events to the most dramatic. All of us here at the County Center can recall seeing her at work on numerous occasions. Her talent, which graced the newspapers right up until her death, will be dearly missed; as will be the grace with which she focused her camera.

Discussion

The memory of Susan Jean Caldwell’s artistic skill and ability should not fade. In honor of what she gave to our county and to encourage others to follow in her path, we are recommending that the San Mateo County Hall of Justice Art Gallery be named the “Susan Jean Caldwell Memorial Art Gallery.”
