RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE MARINE LIFE PROTECTION ACT

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County is committed to protecting and enhancing natural resources through stewardship of our coastal and marine ecosystems, and;

 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County acknowledges and respects the importance of the marine environment to our economy, our quality of life, educational opportunities for our children and community, and for the long-term viability of marine life in our coastal zone, and;

 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County takes seriously the threat of human impact on the marine environment and the potential for irreversible damage to our coastal ecosystems without conscientious resource management, and;

 

WHEREAS, the State of California adopted the Marine Life Protection Act to protect California’s marine natural heritage, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Governor of California has called for a new initiative, including the creation of a Blue Ribbon Task Force, to plan the implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act and fulfill the Act’s stated intention of conserving California’s ocean resources for their intrinsic value and for the benefit of current and future generations, and;

 

WHEREAS, in response to the Governor’s request, the State has invited a wide and diverse range of stakeholders to participate in the Marine Life Protection Act Initiative, and;

 

WHEREAS, all meetings of the Blue Ribbon Task Force will be open to those interested in the implementation of the Marine Life Protection Act and that public comment will be taken into consideration on how the Marine Life Protection Act will be implemented, and;

 

WHEREAS, San Mateo County recognizes the importance of committed leadership and diverse communities engaging in the plans to protect our marine environment, and;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors supports California’s Marine Life Protection Act and urges its full and timely implementation.
