THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS | ||||
RESOLUTION HONORING AND COMMENDING | ||||
GEORGE KANAKARIS | ||||

WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS attended San Francisco City College and Lainey College to study Graphic Arts before taking up studies in Business at Skyline College and Hydraulics at the University of Southern California; and | ||||
WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS began serving in the army in 1965, was stationed in Vietnam 1965 to 1966 where he attended U.S. Army Aviation School for Helicopters and Bell Helicopter School, became an instructor after attending U.S. Army Leadership School and was honorably discharged in 1969; and | ||||
WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS worked for many years in the newspaper business as a photo engraver and offset camera man, for the Alameda Times Star and other newspapers including The Chronicle and The Examiner; and | ||||
WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS began his public service career in 1968 as a Maintenance Worker in the City of San Bruno Public Works Department and was quickly promoted to Senior Maintenance Worker and continued on to become the Water Services Manager; and | ||||
WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS used his drive and leadership as General Manager of North Coast County Water District from 1998 to 2005 to significantly improve San Bruno’s water distribution system while keeping abreast of new developments in water quality, legal and jurisdictional issues and strengthening staff training and preparedness; and | ||||
WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS was influential in working with the Prop 50 Coalition, meeting with State representatives and bringing regional solutions to the San Francisco peninsula such as the Sharp Park Recycling Project to irrigate Sharp Park Golf Course with recycled water from the Pacifica Wastewater Treatment Plant; and | ||||
WHEREAS, GEORGE KANAKARIS has made countless friends over the years he has worked in the water industry, has been a driving force behind good working relationships with a multitude of agencies and led as president of the 100-member strong American Water Works Association’s Materials Performance Committee among other accomplishments; and | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County expresses congratulations and sincere gratitude to GEORGE KANAKARIS and wishes him a happy retirement with his wife, Carol Kanakaris, and two sons Bill and Brian who carry on the tradition of working in the water industry. | ||||
