THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS, COUNTY OF SAN MATEO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA DESIGNATING JUNE 3, 2005 AS WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY AND WELCOMING THE UNITED NATION DELAGATE TOURS IN SAN MATEO COUNTY

WHEREAS, for the first time in the 33 year history of World Environment Day, the United Nations has selected an American city, San Francisco, to host its international World Environment Day symposium; and

   

WHEREAS, for World Environment Day, mayors from around the world will be meeting June 1st – 5th to celebrate Green Cities and create a plan for sustainable urban futures to be called the San Francisco Urban Environmental Accords; and

   

WHEREAS, the goal of World Environment Day has been to advance sustainability, foster vibrant economies, promote social equity, and protect the planet’s natural systems by raising political and public awareness; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County has been selected for an official tour for delegates from the UN’s World Environment Day to showcase cutting edge tertiary treatment technology at Pacifica’s Calera Creek Water Recycling Plant and innovations in clean boating and sustainable fishing at Pillar Point Harbor Friday June 3rd; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County will offer a tour of the 2,326 acre San Bruno Mountain park for UN delegates to World Environment Day Wednesday June 1st with opportunity to see the 14 species of rare and endangered plants and native wild butterflies; and

   

WHEREAS, San Mateo County Parks at San Bruno Mountain Saturday June 4th and Coyote Point Sunday June 5th will be open with docent tours for the public at no charge in honor of World Environment Day; and

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, hereby designates June 3, 2005 as World Environment Day and welcomes mayors from around the world to enjoy learning about recycled water, sustainable fishing and our wealth of natural park resources in San Mateo County.
