RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMENDING
|
|
Victoria Manalo Draves
|
Upon the Dedication of
|
Victoria Manalo Draves Park in San Francisco
|

|
WHEREAS, Victoria Manalo Draves, a San Francisco native, was born on New Year’s Eve 1924, and overcame economic, social and ethnic hurdles to become the first person in Olympic history to win two individual gold medals in diving during the 1948 Summer Games in London; and
|

|
WHEREAS, Victoria Manalo Draves started diving at age 16, but was forced to use her mother’s maiden name, instead of her Filipino name, so she would be allowed to train at the Fairmont Hotel Swimming and Diving Club; and
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Victoria Manalo Draves continued diving while attending Commerce High School and San Francisco Junior College, training at the Crystal Plunge under the guidance of Charlie Sava, after the Fairmont Hotel Swimming and Diving Club closed with the outbreak of World War II; and
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Victoria Manalo Draves left the Bay Area after she was denied entry into a diving competition because of her Filipino heritage, and went on to win the 1946, 1947 and 1948 United States National Diving Championships in platform diving and the springboard diving championship in 1949, while guided by her devoted coach and husband, Lyle Draves.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County congratulates and commends Olympic Champion Victoria Manalo Draves for her courage, dedication and persistence in the face of adversity, and for setting an inspirational example for others to follow.
