AFFORDABLE HOUSING WEEK

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

WHEREAS, the Bay Area Counties are in unison in proclaiming a week in the month of June as Affordable Housing Week to place emphasis on the growing need for support for the housing sector in their task to fill in gaps in availability and affordability of housing in individual counties; and

WHEREAS, access to decent, affordable housing is central and basic to the American Dream and San Mateo County renters and non-homeowners dream to live in affordable good-quality homes; and

WHEREAS, the most significant housing challenge is affordability, reaching across the income spectrum except the highest income group, with one in nine households spending more than half their incomes on housing, and the magnitude of this affordability problem is severely felt among lower-income households; and

WHEREAS, it cannot be emphasized enough that decent and affordable housing promotes self-sufficiency and family stability, revitalizes neighborhood and communities, supports economic growth, and most importantly, creates a positive environment and improves life outcomes for children; and

WHEREAS, housing is of great importance not only to individuals and families, but as well as to our communities and our nation, making up more than a third of the nation’s tangible assets and consistently generating more than 20% of the nation’s gross domestic product; and

WHEREAS, our nation as a whole is faced with the ever growing problem of bridging the gap between demand and supply for affordable housing, with causes for inadequate supply as varied as rising housing development costs in relation to family incomes, insufficient financing and public subsidies, and restrictive zoning laws, to name a few; and

WHEREAS, Federal, State and County support for the housing sector has taken many forms over the years but clearly, has not been sufficient in the production of affordable housing, and therefore, counties reach out to the private sector for greater involvement and investment in affordable housing; and

WHEREAS, solutions to increased production of affordable housing depend heavily on the collaborative efforts of the public sector, nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses, private sector and the valuable role of our citizenry; and

WHEREAS, our goal is to assist families, particularly working families, in San Mateo County, in having access to affordable housing;

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, does hereby proclaim the week of June 3 through June 11, 2005 as AFFORDABLE HOUSING WEEK, and enjoins all San Mateo County residents to support our efforts toward the goal of “a decent home and a suitable living environment for every family”.
