Background/Discussion

Peninsula Pathologists Medical Group, Inc. has provided management, supervision, and physician services for clinical and anatomical pathology to the San Mateo Medical Center for the last three years. SMMC has a continuous need for 24-hour laboratory coverage and this group offers the hospital the benefits of a large practice with pathology specialties and administrative support.

There are five specific areas of clinical and anatomical pathology services covered under this contract, including pathology, cytology, histology, point of care coordination, and osteoporosis bone density testing. Each specialty area is a response to the requirements governing the preparation and analysis of patients’ blood, tissue, bone, and bodily fluid samples. To maintain clinical and procedural compliance, especially with moderately complex test training and oversight, the contracted levels of service in the areas of point of care coordination and anatomical pathology, including cytology reimbursement have been increased. The impact is an overall contract increase of 7%.

This Agreement increases the maximum amount of the Agreement and incorporates current HIPAA language into the existing Agreement. Risk Management and County Counsel have approved the Agreement.

Term and Fiscal Impact

The term of the Agreement is April 1, 2005 through March 30, 2007. The maximum amount the County shall be obligated to pay Contractor is $1,278,984. Funds are included in the San Mateo Medical Center’s FY2004-05 Adopted Budget and FY2005-06 Recommended Budget.
