RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF AB 866 (YEE), CODE OF FAIR CAMPAIGN PRACTICES

RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that

WHEREAS, the existing Code of Fair Campaign Practices (Code) binds those campaigns and candidates who voluntarily sign the Code to refrain from activities including using or permitting an appeal to negative prejudice based on race, sex, religion, national origin, physical health status, or age but does not include sexual orientation or gender identity; and

WHEREAS, according to AB 866 supporters there have been instances of candidates and campaigns using anti-gay rhetoric appealing to negative prejudice; and

WHEREAS, AB 866 would deter such behavior by adding to the existing Code, to which candidates voluntarily subscribe, a provision that a candidate will not use or permit any appeal to negative prejudice based on sexual orientation or gender identity; and

WHEREAS, support of AB 866 would further the County’s Visioning commitment to realize the potential of our diverse population.

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by adoption of this resolution does hereby support AB 866 regarding Code of Fair Campaign Practices.
