VISION ALIGNMENT:
Commitments: Preserve and provide people access to our natural environment.
Goals 14 and 15: Important natural resources are preserved and enhanced through environmental stewardship. Residents have nearby access to green space, such as parks and recreational opportunities.
These donations and in-kind gifts contribute to these goals by providing needed funding for programs such as the Volunteer Program, Edgewood Serpentine Restoration Program, and interpretive centers that develop environmental stewardship and preserve natural resources and for projects that provide access to green space as well as enhance that experience such as the study for the promenade repair, landscaping, and Captain’s House renovation at Coyote Point Park and the replacement of the entry bridge at Wunderlich Park.
BACKGROUND:
Since its inception in 1998, the Foundation has raised or received pledges for $5 million in funds for various park improvements. Periodically, a work program is developed jointly between the Foundation and the Division that identifies priority projects. Once funding for specific projects is complete, the Foundation conveys funding to the County for acceptance by the Board of Supervisors.
In addition to their direct and in-kind donations in FY 04-05, the Parks Foundation secured over $575,885 in grants paid directly to the County. These grants include:
$150,000 ($50,000 Command oil spill mitigation funds and $100,000 Environmental Enhancement and Mitigation Program) towards the construction of the California Coastal Trail at Mirada Surf
$150,000 from Bay Bridge Mitigation funds for the replacement of the failing McGarvey Gulch culvert in Huddart to improve fish passage,
$279,885 in CA Department of Fish and Game funds for fish habitat improvements in Memorial including modification of the Sequoia Flat crossing, installation of wells for potable water and removal of the summer dam foundation in Memorial.
It is also of note that the Executive Director of the Parks and Recreation Foundation, Ms. Julia Bott, has been a primary steering committee member for the Parks for the Future group that is trying to establish dedicated funding for parks, County and City, throughout San Mateo County.
