RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF AB 889 (RUSKIN), WEIGHTS AND MEASURES
______________________________________________________________
RESOLVED, by the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo, State of California, that
WHEREAS, San Mateo County’s Sealer of Weights and Measures received 60 complaints related to weights and measures and inspected an estimated 2,340 businesses in 2004-05; and
WHEREAS, while the program has been successful, fees, last amended in 1994, no longer cover the cost of operating the program; and
WHEREAS, with the passage of a San Mateo County retail price scanner ordinance, the County has been expanding its inspection of price scanners since 2003; and
WHEREAS, AB 889 would update the fee schedule, extend counties’ ability to charge registration fees to 2011 and extend the authority of county sealers of weights and measures to levy civil penalties for violations rather than impose criminal actions; and
WHEREAS, AB 889 would provide counties criteria and methodology to inspect the accuracy of retail point of sale systems, commonly called price scanners; and
WHEREAS, AB 889 furthers the County’s Visioning 2010 commitment to responsive, effective and collaborative government and supports the goal of making government decisions based on careful consideration of future impact rather than temporary relief or immediate gain;
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY DETERMINED AND ORDERED that the Board of Supervisors by adoption of this resolution does hereby support AB 889.
