TO:

Honorable Board of Supervisors

FROM:

Neil R. Cullen, Director of Public Works

SUBJECT:

Installation of a Stop Sign on Laurel Hill Drive (County Road No. 267) at Lexington Avenue (County Road No. 252-A) – San Mateo Highlands Area

Recommendation

Adopt a resolution authorizing the installation of a stop sign on Laurel Hill Drive at its intersection with Lexington Avenue.

Vision Alignment

Commitment: Ensure basic health and safety for all.

Goal(s): Maintain and enhance public safety of all residents and visitors.

We believe the installation of a stop sign will provide for the orderly flow of traffic through this intersection.

Background

We received a request by a resident in the area concerned with the safety of motorists entering the intersection of Laurel Hill Drive and Lexington Avenue. We evaluated the intersection and determined that the sight distance of Lexington Avenue from Laurel Hill Drive is limited by the steep uphill grade of Laurel Hill Drive.

Discussion

We believe that installation of a stop sign is appropriate, as it will address the limited sight distance for motorists traveling on Laurel Hill Drive and entering Lexington Avenue and, at the same time, address the concerns expressed by the resident.

A copy of this report has been sent to property owners within three hundred feet (300’) of the intersection and to the San Mateo Highlands Community Association, and we have notified them of the date when your Board is scheduled to consider our report and recommendation.

A resolution has been approved as to form by County Counsel.

Fiscal Impact

The installation of a stop sign is estimated to cost $400 and is proposed to be funded with Road Funds that have been appropriated this fiscal year to finance small road related improvements or traffic related installations.

There is no impact on the General Fund.
