Agreement with The Regents of the University of California

 

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution:

A)

Accepting a grant from The Regents of the University of California for $75,000 to participate in conducting a program titled “Integrated Nurse Leadership Program”.

B)

Authorizing the execution of an Agreement with The Regents of the University of California to conduct the program for the term March 1, 2005 to May 31, 2006

The goal of the program is to reduce nursing vacancies and nursing staff turnover.

BACKGROUND:

The Regents of the University of California is the recipient of a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation for the conduct of a program titled “Integrated Nurse Leadership Program”. The Program supports Bay Area hospital in developing and designing pilot projects and in supporting skill development in leadership and management to facilitate change as strategies for improving work environment and nursing related patient outcomes.

 

DISCUSSION:

The Regents of the University of California is awarding San Mateo Medical Center $75,000 to participate in the Program. San Mateo Medical Center will develop unit councils in four pilot nursing units with the project objectives to include 1) developing a unit mission, 2) identifying components of professional nursing, 3) engaging staff in unit leadership, 4) educating councils in project implementation skills, 5) improving selected patient outcomes, and 6) improving nurse satisfaction retention.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

The grant from The Regents of the University of California is $75,000. Funds will be included in the September budget revision. The term of the Agreement is March 1, 2005 to May 31, 2006. San Mateo Medical Center will match this grant through staff hours dedicated to planning and implementing the program’s objectives. Administrative oversight and project monitoring will be provided by existing San Mateo Medical Center staff. There is no net county cost associated with this Agreement.
