Agreement with the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation

 

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution:

A)

Accepting a grant from the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation in the amount of $75,000 to support the San Mateo Medical Center’s participation in the Foundation’s San Francisco Bay Area Challenge Grant Program for implementation of interventions recommended by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s “100K Lives Campaign”.

B)

Authorizing the execution of an Agreement with the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation for San Mateo Medical Center to implement said interventions for the term June 13, 2005 to June 30, 2007

Four interventions will be implemented completely by December 30, 2006. Data will continue to be sent to the Foundation through June 30, 2007.

 

BACKGROUND:

The Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation, through its Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative, supports efforts to “Improve nursing –related patient outcomes in acute care hospitals”. Improving patient safety practices is one area of emphasis of this initiative. In March, 2005 the Foundation created the San Francisco Bay Area Challenge Grant Program to speed implementation of patient safety related interventions in Bay Area hospitals. All hospitals were encouraged to apply for this Challenge grant.

 

DISCUSSION:

In April, 2004, the San Mateo Medical Center applied for a Challenge grant to support efforts to implement interventions identified in the “100K Lives Campaign” On June 13, 2005, the Medical Center was awarded a Challenge grant in the amount of $75,000. The interventions chosen to be implemented are: Medication Reconciliation, Rapid Response Team, Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, and Surgical Site Infection Study.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

The grant from the Betty and Gordon Moore Foundation is $75,000. Funds will be included in the September budget revision. The term of the Agreement is June 13, 2005 through June 30, 2007. San Mateo Medical Center will match this grant through staff hours dedicated to planning and implementing each of the interventions. Administrative oversight and project monitoring will be provided by existing San Mateo Medical Center staff. There is no net county cost associated with this project.
