Agreement with the Blue Shield of California Hospital Scholarship Program

 

RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt a Resolution:

A)

Accepting a grant from the Blue Shield of California Hospital Scholarship Program in the amount of $20,000 to support the San Mateo Medical Center’s implementation of interventions recommended by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s “100K Lives Campaign”.

B)

Authorizing the execution of an Agreement with Blue Shield of California Hospital Scholarship Program for San Mateo Medical Center to implement said interventions for the term August 1, 2005 to September 1, 2006

Four interventions will be implemented completely by June, 2006. Data will continue to be sent to the Foundation through September 1, 2006.

 

BACKGROUND:

The Blue Shield of California Foundation created the Hospital Scholarship Program supporting public, rural, and district hospital participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s “100K Lives Campaign” to speed implementation of patient safety related interventions in Bay Area hospitals.

 

DISCUSSION:

In June, 2005, the San Mateo Medical Center applied to the Blue Shield of California Foundation Hospital Scholarship Program for a Challenge grant to support efforts to implement interventions identified in the “100K Lives Campaign” On July 22, 2005, the Medical Center was awarded a Challenge grant in the amount of $20,000. The interventions chosen to be implemented are: Medication Reconciliation, Rapid Response Team, Ventilator Associated Pneumonia, and Surgical Site Infection Study.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

The grant from the Blue Shield of California Foundation Hospital Scholarship will not exceed $20,000. Funds will be included in the September budget revision. The term of the Agreement is August 1, 2005 through September 1, 2006. San Mateo Medical Center will match this grant through staff hours dedicated to planning and implementing each of the interventions. Administrative oversight and project monitoring will be provided by existing San Mateo Medical Center staff. There is no net county cost associated with this Agreement.
