BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
Dr. James Meier has provided obstetrics and gynecology services to the San Mateo Medical Center for the last several years. In particular these disciplines serve as the basis for routine evaluation and treatment of pre-, intra-, and post partum care (obstetrics) and the evaluation, diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of uterine, ovarian, endometrial, and vaginal disease (gynecology). SMMC has a continuous need for obstetrics and gynecology services and Dr. Meier and his group will offer the hospital the benefits of experienced practitioners familiar with the complex nature of the County’s patient base.
A multi-million dollar project to establish a labor and delivery unit is currently underway and expected to be completed in early 2006. SMMC will be bringing the OB birthing service in-house with 8 LDRP and 1 delivery suite, expanding our service hours once this project is complete. The current contract is therefore only an extension of six months while we negotiate a longer term contract that takes into account the comprehensive need for this new service.
This Agreement incorporates current HIPAA language. Risk Management and County Counsel have approved the Agreement.

TERM AND FISCAL IMPACT:
The term of the Agreement is July 1, 2005 through December 31, 2005. The maximum amount the County shall be obligated to pay Contractor is $1,200,000. Funds are included in the San Mateo Medical Center’s FY2005-06 Recommended Budget.
