BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:

Dr. Dennis Israelski has provided infectious diseases services to the San Mateo Medical Center for the last several years. He has served in many roles, most notably as the Chief of Staff and a member of the Foundation. He has brought vision, enthusiasm, and commitment to the medical center facility through his clinical expertise in the fields of infectious diseases and AIDS research.

The discipline of infectious diseases serves as the basis for evaluation and treatment of blood-borne, airborne, direct contract, or projected sputum droplets communicative diseases including HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis, and Hepatitis C. Dr. Israelski’s leadership in this area and his participation with Stanford Hospital and Clinics allows county patients to have access to therapies that they otherwise may not be able to receive. It has also allowed the County to continue to remain on the leading edge of clinical research. In light of the medical center’s most current financial circumstances, Dr. Israelski has agreed to accept a reduction in reimbursement yet continue to provide the same level of services.

Infectious disease services are provided under the general direction of the Chief of Medicine at the San Mateo Medical Center. Monitoring and evaluation of the quality of services provided by contractor are accomplished through peer review by the Quality Improvement Committee and the Medical Executive Committee of the medical staff. This Agreement incorporates current HIPAA language. Risk Management and County Counsel have approved the Agreement.

TERM AND FISCAL IMPACT:

The term of the Agreement is April 1, 2005 through June 30, 2007. The maximum amount the County shall be obligated to pay Contractor is $822,500. The Agreement budget is a 33% reduction from Dr. Israelski’s previous contract. Funds are included in the San Mateo Medical Center’s FY2005-06 Adopted Budget.
