THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS | ||||
RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING | ||||
The San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services | ||||

WHEREAS, the 2005 hurricanes that devastated New Orleans and other parts of the Gulf Coast reminded residents and officials alike that the San Andreas fault splits San Mateo County south to north; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the 20 cities and unincorporated areas of San Mateo County are collectively susceptible to catastrophic events, natural or otherwise, that could leave individuals and families isolated from emergency crews for days; and | ||||
WHEREAS, the Office of Emergency Services was instrumental in coordinating the first-ever countywide Disaster Preparedness Day to educate the public about how to ready themselves for large-scale, regional crises; and | ||||
WHEREAS, in six weeks time, OES brought together dozens of organizations, public and private; municipal, county and statewide; to create an event attended by more than 5,000 individuals seeking preparedness information; and | ||||
WHEREAS, responses from the vast majority of participants of the Nov. 12, 2005, Disaster Preparedness Day were overwhelmingly positive and that the public would be well-served by establishing Disaster Preparedness Day as an annual event. | ||||
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Supervisors of San Mateo County recognizes and commends the San Mateo County Office of Emergency Services for its leadership in creating Disaster Preparedness Day 2005. The Board believes that the event helped myriad residents and businesses become better prepared, and hereby extends to OES its gratitude and sincere wishes for continued excellence. | ||||
